Elsewhere, public investment in domestic manufacturing, data centres and energy infrastructure has created opportunities, but usually in narrow, highly specific functions rather than in large-scale headcount growth.
A review in ScienceDirect on generative AI in supply chain analytics suggests why this is happening. The study finds that AI is strengthening decision support and transforming core supply chain processes, while also pointing to important gaps in areas such as manufacturing, sustainability and reverse logistics. The broader message is that technology is altering how work is done, not eliminating the need for judgement, coordination and domain expertise.
That view is echoed by the World Economic Forum’s CHAIN Leadership Model, which identifies five core capabilities for supply chain leaders: collaboration, holistic thinking, adaptability, influence and narrative. In practice, that means leaders need to understand the whole business, work across functions, persuade stakeholders and explain complex decisions clearly. Becker’s Hospital Review has similarly argued that communication, leadership and teamwork remain essential even as supply chains become more technology-driven.
The same pattern is visible in procurement. Once seen mainly as a cost-cutting discipline, it is now more often treated as a strategic function focused on supplier relationships, resilience and long-term value. As sourcing tools, spend analytics and automated workflows become more common, some entry-level work has disappeared, making it harder for future leaders to gain the hands-on experience needed to develop strategic capability. Yet the skills that matter most in senior procurement, such as cross-functional communication, supplier development and balancing cost with risk, are still difficult to automate.
That is why the next generation of supply chain leadership is likely to be defined less by who uses AI and more by who combines technical fluency with soft skills and operational judgement. As SAP has noted, modern supply chains increasingly depend on collaboration, communication and comfort with ambiguity. For professionals who can link technology with human insight, the outlook remains strong.
