The legal framework also matters. The discussion refers to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975, which set standards for consumer product warranties in the United States and was designed to protect buyers from misleading claims. In practice, express warranties spell out specific promises in writing, while implied warranties are understood to mean that a product should be fit for ordinary use unless those protections are clearly excluded.
That distinction becomes important when a vehicle or component fails within the warranty period. Customers may expect repair or replacement under the terms of the written warranty, but manufacturers typically need receipts, serial numbers, service histories and other documentation before approving a claim. If records are incomplete, or if maintenance cannot be shown to have been carried out in line with the manufacturer’s guidance, claims may be rejected.
The operational burden is substantial. Claims often move through a slow chain of validation, assessment and processing, with data drawn from different systems that do not easily talk to each other. The result, as the InterSystems piece argues, is that root-cause analysis may not begin until long after the original complaint was filed.
The cost of that delay is not only financial. Slower resolution ties up capital in reserves, raises labour costs and delays reimbursement for dealers and suppliers. It can also weaken customer confidence, particularly when owners feel that a manufacturer is not acting quickly enough to stand behind its products. In more serious cases, slow recognition of a pattern can allow a defect to spread before it becomes visible enough to trigger wider action.
InterSystems says the answer lies in decision intelligence, backed by AI-enabled data integration. By unifying quality and operational data and automating preparation and reporting, manufacturers can move from reactive handling of claims to faster, risk-based decisions. The company claims that cutting the preparation and assessment cycle by four weeks could deliver an 8% annual cost reduction, a figure it links to the industry’s $65 billion in global warranty accruals in 2023.
InterSystems is positioning its Supply Chain Orchestrator and Data Studio products as part of that shift. The company says the tools are designed to connect fragmented data sources, support predictive and prescriptive analytics and simplify the flow of information to the users and systems that need it. Data Studio acts as a low-code gateway for bringing data into the orchestrator, while the broader platform is intended to sit alongside existing infrastructure rather than replace it.
Other providers are pursuing similar automation in adjacent parts of the market. Distral says its system can read repair orders, apply original equipment manufacturer rules and track claims through to payment. Intelli Warranty, from Intellinet System, is also marketed as a way to reduce manual processing, improve accuracy and make dealer networks more efficient. The growing interest in such tools reflects a broader industry realisation: warranty handling is increasingly a data and workflow problem, not just an administrative one.
That message has been reinforced by wider industry analysis. McKinsey has said warranty costs have climbed sharply in recent years and that some OEMs are adopting AI-enabled quality systems to identify risks earlier. Against that backdrop, the move to decision intelligence looks less like a technology upgrade than a defensive necessity for a sector trying to contain quality failures before they become expensive and public.
