L’Oréal Travel Retail and Avolta have agreed a joint sustainability-linked business plan aimed at cutting emissions, widening access to refillable beauty and embedding sustainability more deeply into frontline retail operations across the global travel retail sector.

ngagement in airports and other international travel hubs. At its centre is an ambition for refill formats to account for 10% of core fragrance offerings by 2030, a target that gives the partnership a clear commercial marker as well as an environmental one.
The agreement comes as travel retail operators and beauty groups face rising pressure to align sales growth with lower-impact operations. L’Oréal Travel Retail said market data it cites suggests that 80% of Gen Z shoppers are looking for sustainable beauty products in duty free, underscoring the commercial case for refillable formats and more visible low-waste options at point of sale.
Beyond product circularity, the plan also covers logistics. The companies intend to reduce transport-related emissions by making greater use of lower-emission freight methods and improving truckload efficiency, a measure that could trim the environmental footprint of moving stock through a complex international retail network. The partnership also includes dedicated corporate social responsibility training for Beauty Advisors, with the aim of giving store teams a stronger understanding of sustainability initiatives and improving how they are explained to customers.
Eva Yu, president of L’Oréal Travel Retail, said the partnership was designed to turn common sustainability goals into operational changes, while also expanding refillable beauty and reducing the logistics footprint across major travel centres.
For Avolta, the deal sits alongside its broader Destination 2027 strategy, which frames sustainability as one of the pillars of its business model and highlights climate change, energy use, emissions, sustainable sourcing and supply chain management among its material priorities. L’Oréal Travel Retail, which describes itself as serving the global traveller across a broad portfolio ranging from luxury beauty to dermocosmetics and haircare, has already made sustainability part of its own operating model through measures such as certified sustainable packaging materials and recycling initiatives for merchandising equipment.
The new plan reflects a broader shift within both companies from broad environmental pledges towards more measurable targets. It also signals that refillable beauty, once positioned as a niche concept, is increasingly being treated as a scalable part of the travel retail offer, particularly in a channel where consumers are often exposed to brands for the first time and where operational changes can be rolled out across large airport and travel hub networks.
