A digital product passport, usually accessed through a QR code, RFID tag or similar identifier, is designed to provide exactly that. According to the International Organization for Standardization, the concept covers a digital record that follows a product, component or material through its lifecycle, bringing together details on identity, composition, environmental characteristics and repair information in a form that can be updated over time.
The European Union is driving much of the momentum through its Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which is expected to make digital product passports mandatory across a growing range of sectors. Batteries, textiles, electronics, furniture and other consumer goods are among the categories likely to be affected. Yet the significance of the model goes well beyond compliance. It is also becoming a way to improve traceability, support sustainability reporting, reduce counterfeiting risk and strengthen cross-border trade.
At a United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific event on 3 September 2026, experts discussed how digital product passports could help modernise customs risk management and enable more paperless trade. The session also underlined the importance of standards and interoperability, with contributors from organisations including UN/CEFACT and ISO/IEC JTC 5 stressing that trusted digital ecosystems will be essential if the system is to work across jurisdictions.
For companies, the appeal lies in the operational benefits as much as the regulatory ones. Building a passport requires firms to collect, verify and maintain data from multiple supplier tiers, exposing gaps that often remain hidden in fragmented enterprise systems. That process can improve visibility far beyond direct suppliers, helping businesses understand product origins more clearly, spot sourcing risks earlier and respond more quickly to regulatory questions.
The circular economy case is also strong. Repair technicians can use the data to identify parts and maintenance requirements. Recyclers can see what materials are present and how to separate them safely. Manufacturers can learn more about how products perform after sale. In effect, the passport preserves information that is often lost once a product leaves the factory floor.
Consumer trust is another likely dividend. As pressure grows on brands to substantiate sustainability claims, a passport offers a route away from vague marketing language and towards evidence-based disclosure. A simple scan could reveal manufacturing details, materials used, environmental metrics, certification data, warranty terms and disposal guidance. That kind of transparency may help businesses avoid accusations of greenwashing while giving customers more confidence in what they are buying.
The practical challenge is considerable. Product data is often scattered across product lifecycle management systems, enterprise resource planning tools, supplier portals, logistics platforms and certification databases. Many suppliers still rely on spreadsheets and emails, which makes accurate, consistent record-keeping difficult. Companies are increasingly turning to integrated digital platforms, with artificial intelligence being used to extract information from documents, flag missing records and check data quality.
Some industry voices also see a security dimension. Advocates of verifiable credentials and blockchain-based records argue that digital product passports could help tackle counterfeit goods by making product information harder to fake and easier to audit. That is a significant attraction in sectors where authenticity and provenance matter as much as sustainability.
Although Europe is setting the pace, many observers expect similar transparency requirements to spread elsewhere. That means companies that start building robust data foundations now may be better placed to adapt later. Preparation will involve more than gathering information; it will require stronger governance, supplier engagement and closer coordination between procurement, compliance, sustainability, product development and logistics teams.
In that sense, the digital product passport is emerging as more than a regulatory obligation. It is becoming part of a wider shift towards products that can be traced, verified, repaired and reused with far greater precision. For businesses willing to invest early, that may prove to be less a burden than a competitive advantage.
