Federal procurement is at an inflection point. McKinsey said on 8 June 2026 that tighter budgets, closer scrutiny of public spending and persistent supply-chain disruption are pushing agencies to rethink how they buy, especially as the federal government spends more than $650 billion a year through third-party contracts. The firm argues that procurement has moved well beyond a back-office role and is now central to mission delivery. (
