Andrew Khan, managing director of Carlsberg Vietnam, said suppliers had played a central role in the brewer’s development and would remain essential as it pursues its long-term sustainability goals. He said Brewing Tomorrow is intended to create value beyond the breweries, for employees, consumers, partners, communities and the environment, and argued that progress depends on trust, shared responsibility and ongoing innovation.
Frank Pogade, vice chairman of EuroCham’s Green Growth Sector Committee, pointed to water management as one of Vietnam’s most urgent sustainability issues. Speaking at the event, he said stronger cooperation between businesses, policymakers and industry would be needed to turn available technologies into lasting gains.
Brewing Tomorrow is Carlsberg Group’s long-term ESG framework and is built around four priorities: Cutting Carbon, Protecting Nature, Inspiring Choice and Empowering People. The group recently said the updated programme includes revised Scope 3 emissions goals aligned with Science Based Targets initiative guidance, more emphasis on regenerative agriculture and recycled materials, new sugar-reduction targets and a stronger focus on inclusion in the employee experience. The target year for the programme is 2032, with a commitment to a net-zero value chain by 2040.
At the centre of Carlsberg Vietnam’s environmental push is Phu Bai Brewery, which the group says became its largest beer production site in Asia after an expansion completed in August 2025. The company says the site’s newer brewing technology has cut water use by about 20 per cent and energy consumption by roughly 15 per cent compared with earlier equipment.
Carlsberg Vietnam says the brewery now uses around 2.1 litres of water for every litre of beer produced, making it one of the country’s most water-efficient facilities. The company also says it achieved zero waste to landfill earlier this year, with non-recyclable waste redirected to energy recovery and wastewater treatment sludge reused in agriculture. Its glass bottles are returnable, with 98.5 per cent collected and reused.
The brewer is also pushing ahead with renewable energy plans, including a rooftop solar project and a pathway towards direct power purchase agreements. It says these efforts support the group’s ambition of net-zero emissions across its value chain by 2040, while Carlsberg Vietnam has separately outlined a production net-zero target for 2028.
Beyond manufacturing, the company said Brewing Tomorrow also covers consumer behaviour and community engagement. Its work includes a long-term partnership with Grab on responsible drinking and safer mobility, alongside local beach clean-ups, cycling events and other environmental activities.
Carlsberg Vietnam says the programme also places people at the heart of its strategy, with a focus on safety, inclusion and leadership development. It is working towards a zero-accident culture and says it supports Carlsberg Group’s goal of reaching 42 per cent women in senior leadership roles by 2032.
For Carlsberg Vietnam, the Supplier Day marked both a launch and a statement of intent: that the company sees sustainability not as a standalone project, but as something to be built with suppliers, partners and local communities over time.
