According to the original report by the bank, the new supply chain finance (SCF) solution is built on China Systems’ Eximbills microservices , the first deployment of that platform in Africa , and is designed to automate workflows, reduce manual intervention and shorten turnaround times. The bank says roughly 70% of its SCF programmes have now been digitised and 64% of SCF clients are fully onboarded through digital channels. Industry data cited by the bank shows 85% of transactions are processed by Straight‑Through Processing and paper reliance is now under 10%, while digitally active users of the broader Nedbank Business Hub rose 11.4% to 2.3 million, with 1.6 million regular users of the Money app.
The architecture is cloud‑first and API‑friendly, reflecting a wider shift in trade finance away from bespoke, on‑premise systems towards scalable, modular services. The bank’s adoption of Eximbills aims to improve back‑office processing, systems integration and security for SCF transactions, according to vendor descriptions of the product. GTR Review and other trade publications noted the collaboration as a continental first for China Systems’ microservices in a lender environment.
Nedbank has also moved to embed its financing into commercial ecosystems. In partnership with DP World Trade Finance, it has introduced programmes that allow suppliers to receive early payment on approved receivables, while incorporating risk‑sharing and co‑lending mechanisms intended to expand available credit without proportionally increasing single‑party credit exposure. DP World Trade Finance said in a statement that the initiative will allow its suppliers in the region to access receivables financing on the DP World platform, with Nedbank acting as the financier.
The digital and partnership strategy has been applied in complex, real‑world engagements such as the bank’s programme for Barloworld. The bank says the Barloworld deployment demonstrates how tailored SCF structures can strengthen liquidity across multi‑tier value chains, improve supplier resilience and deepen client relationships. Nedbank CIB says the platform has generated fee income, bolstered client retention and attracted new mandates, and plans to scale the offering across sectors and jurisdictions.
Market observers describe the developments as part of a broader push to modernise trade finance in Africa, where working capital constraints and limited credit capacity have long constrained trade. Reports from trade finance outlets and regional financial press highlight the potential of digital SCF to lower costs, speed disbursements and widen access for smaller suppliers integrated into large corporate supply chains. At the same time, industry commentators caution that digitalisation must be matched by robust risk frameworks and interoperability standards if gains are to be sustained across borders.
The bank’s own progress has been recognised by The Digital Banker’s Global Transaction Banking Innovation Awards 2025, which named Nedbank CIB Best Bank for Supply Chain Finance – South Africa and Outstanding Supply Chain Finance Solution for its role in the Barloworld engagement. The awards, the organisers stated, reflect the bank’s advances in automation, ecosystem collaboration and platform‑based delivery.
While Nedbank emphasises operational gains and client benefits, external trade finance analysts note challenges ahead: building cross‑border regulatory harmonisation, ensuring seamless KYC and credit assessment across partner networks, and extending digital onboarding to smaller, less digitally mature suppliers. Nevertheless, the combination of a cloud‑native processing backbone and partnership distribution , exemplified by the China Systems and DP World relationships , positions the bank to increase the scale and reach of SCF in markets that have historically been underserved by traditional trade credit.
As Nedbank moves to roll the platform more widely, the coming months will test whether the technical and commercial architecture can translate pilot successes into measurable expansion of affordable working capital across the region , and whether risk‑sharing arrangements with logistics and platform partners can sustainably unlock new pools of credit for African trade.
