Agent experience, or AX, is the discipline that emerges from that shift. According to the Nordic APIs analysis, AX is “the act of designing a product in a way that AI agents can ‘understand’ it and reliably interact with it autonomously.” In other words, AX is UX where the user happens to be an agent. It builds on the lessons of UX and DX rather than replacing them: humans will continue to use and evaluate APIs, but agents bring different needs that require intentional design changes.
The industry signals are unmistakable. Gartner forecasts that by 2028, 33% of enterprise applications will include agentic AI, with agentic systems making 15% of day-to-day work decisions autonomously. According to Salesforce, CEO Marc Benioff has articulated a vision of one billion AI agents by the end of 2026, underscoring the scale at which agentic consumption could arrive. Those projections heighten the imperative for API providers to prepare now.
Agents behave differently from human developers, and those differences drive new design priorities. Autonomous agents cannot “read between the lines,” infer vague intent, or cope with inconsistent terminology. As John Gren of Gravitee put it in a presentation cited by Nordic APIs, “an agent needs to be a user within your ecosystem. It needs to be a first-class citizen, a first-class user just like humans are.” Poor agent experience, he warns, means agents “cannot understand what to do, and they will pick other tools instead.”
Five practical areas of focus emerge from current industry thinking and guidance.

Clear, unambiguous documentation
Agents require machine-readable certainty. Content aimed at agents should avoid marketing language, idiom and ambiguity; instead it should look more like precise, contractual definitions. Several practitioner guides and platforms advise comprehensive schema coverage, consistent parameter definitions and explicit constraints so that agents can make deterministic decisions. -
Discoverability and machine-first wiring
Agents will not learn about your API by word of mouth. Model-readable discovery, well-defined schemas, OpenAPI specifications, and techniques such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), is essential. MCP, championed by Anthropic and described by proponents as a kind of “USB-C for AI applications,” is already attracting attention as a standard that can allow agents to discover and integrate services programmatically. Platform speakers at industry events have emphasised that “if an agent can talk MCP, it can integrate with your service.” -
Authentication, authorisation and permission granularity
Interactive auth patterns that work for humans, redirects, CAPTCHAs, manual consent screens, are friction points for autonomous agents. Best practice guidance recommends non-interactive authentication flows, short-lived tokens, fine-grained consents and explicit identity metadata in tokens so agents can be treated as first-class clients while minimising security risk. Clear failure modes and policies for when auth/authorisation fails are equally important so agents can recover or fall back safely. -
Protocols, context management and token economy
Standards and operational practices that reduce token bloat and guard against hallucination are central to scalable AX. Practitioners suggest schema slimming, context trimming and compression modes for code and data to keep context windows efficient when agents operate at scale. As uptake of MCP and similar standards increases, attention to how context is packaged and transmitted will be decisive for performance and reliability. -
Observability, error semantics and automated testing
When an agent encounters a silent failure, it will not file a ticket; it will either retry or migrate to another integration. That makes structured, machine-actionable error messages and robust observability essential. Nordic APIs quotes Gren advocating the inclusion of “agent acceptance criteria when building tools, and automating AI agent tests against tools and agents to ensure that they actually work.” Instrumentation, monitoring and automated agent test harnesses can detect regressions before external agents fail in production.
The business case for investing in AX is growing. Postman’s State of the API 2025, cited by Nordic APIs, found that while 89% of respondents use generative AI daily, only 24% design APIs with agents in mind and 60% primarily design for humans. Other industry estimates, ranging from analyses that most web traffic is API-related to projections that a large share of office tasks will be automated, suggest a near-term future of vastly increased machine-driven API consumption. The logical conclusion is that the organisations that prepare their APIs for agents now will enjoy both resilience and adoption advantage as agents proliferate.
That preparation is not merely technical optimisation; it is also a governance and trust challenge. Designers must balance agent capabilities with human comfort, using permission boundaries and explainability to reassure human stakeholders. Practitioners argue for conservative access controls and for including identity information in tokens so both platforms and human supervisors can audit and understand agent actions.
AX is emerging from established practice rather than replacing it. The evolution from UX to DX to AX is, in many respects, a continuity: all three disciplines value discoverability, predictability and clear mental models. What changes is the unit of interaction and the constraints of the consumer. Agent experience asks API providers to be explicit in ways humans often tolerate being implicit, to present rules where humans might otherwise improvise and to instrument systems so that silent, automated consumers do not fail in the dark.
For teams building APIs and platforms, the immediate checklist is straightforward: expand schema coverage and documentation; adopt machine-readable discovery standards such as OpenAPI and anticipate MCP; design non-interactive, auditable auth flows; optimise context handling for LLM-driven agents; and bake in observability and automated agent testing.
