**London**: PETRONAS has formed a technical partnership with the Energy Institute to drive the energy transition towards a low-carbon future. The collaboration focuses on decarbonisation efforts, innovation ecosystems, and preparing future energy professionals, alongside ongoing projects in carbon capture and renewable energy.
At the recent International Energy Week (IEW) held in London, PETRONAS, a leading energy company headquartered in Southeast Asia, entered into a significant technical partnership with the Energy Institute (EI), a renowned UK-chartered professional membership body. This collaboration aims to accelerate the energy transition and develop a sustainable, low-carbon future.
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including Ir Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, PETRONAS’s Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology, and Dr Nick Wayth, CEO of the Energy Institute. Ir Mohd Yusri expressed the motivation behind the partnership, stating, “By advancing groundbreaking technologies, promoting decarbonisation strategies, and adopting global best practices, our partnership aims to enhance safety, improve efficiency, and elevate environmental responsibility across the industry.”
Dr Nick Wayth echoed this sentiment, indicating that PETRONAS’s extensive expertise will contribute significantly to the Energy Institute’s mission of facilitating a global transition to net zero. “I’m delighted to have the support of our newest Technical Partner, PETRONAS, on this journey,” he remarked.
The collaboration is geared towards fostering innovation ecosystems that promote energy efficiency and decarbonisation. Both organisations intend to leverage their strengths—PETRONAS’s industry insights and the EI’s technical expertise—to guide stakeholders in making informed and strategic decisions that promote sustainability within the energy sector.
Ir Mohd Yusri also highlighted the importance of developing the next generation of energy professionals, stating, “We are committed to empowering the next generation of energy professionals with the knowledge in sustainable practices, technical and technological expertise, and leadership skills needed to shape a sustainable future.” This initiative aims to prepare a workforce capable of addressing future challenges in the energy landscape.
Further underlining the significance of this partnership, PETRONAS showcased its commitment to decarbonisation through various projects, including the Kasawari Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) initiative. This project is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 3.3 million tons annually, signifying a pivotal move towards achieving net-zero emissions.
Moreover, PETRONAS is enhancing its focus on digitalisation and advanced energy solutions, utilising Artificial Intelligence to improve operational efficiency and sustainability across its operations. Ongoing projects include developments in hydrogen technology and renewable energy sources, aimed at providing cleaner energy solutions.
As part of its broader ambitions, PETRONAS has also announced the forthcoming Energy Asia conference, scheduled for 16 to 18 June 2025 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. This conference intends to address the complexities and challenges associated with energy transitions in emerging and developing economies. Under the theme ‘Delivering Asia’s Energy Transition,’ it aims to foster discussions among policymakers, industry leaders, and energy professionals to assist the region in navigating its energy goals while considering economic realities.
Ir Mohd Yusri noted the critical nature of collaboration across the board to support decarbonisation efforts, stressing the need for a cohesive approach among various industry players. The partnership with the Energy Institute represents a milestone in PETRONAS’s long-term strategy to cultivate an inclusive framework for energy transition, particularly in Asia, which is critical in shaping global climate outcomes.
