The Institute for Supply Management® (ISM®) has announced a significant expansion to its mission and offerings, transitioning from a focus predominantly on supply management to encompass comprehensive end-to-end supply chain management. This strategic development was revealed on 18 March 2025 and marks a pivotal moment in ISM’s 110-year history, aligning with the evolving roles and responsibilities of professionals within the supply chain sector.
In comments regarding this expansion, ISM Chief Executive Officer Thomas W. Derry stated, “Our expansion marks a pivotal moment in our organization’s history. We are excited to lead the profession into a new era and provide the comprehensive support supply chain organizations need in today’s complex supply chain environment.” He noted that this change reflects the growing complexity and integration within the field, reinforcing ISM’s dedication to innovation and excellence.
The revised mission aims to enhance the strategy and practice of integrated supply chain management through advanced, data-driven resources, community support, and education. ISM seeks to empower individuals, create organisational value, and drive competitive advantage across the global supply chain community.
As part of this strategic revision, ISM will be expanding its educational offerings to better equip supply chain practitioners with the skills necessary to navigate the increasing complexities of modern supply chains. The newly defined scope of ISM’s activities encompasses all key operational areas, including Planning, Sourcing, Production, and Delivery, as per ISM’s Integrated Supply Chain Model™.
A notable aspect of this expansion includes a focus on logistics, with ISM providing enhanced education and training opportunities.
